Discovery Rotation Model

The goal of our Discovery program is to introduce the young children of the congregation to the Presbyterian Church, the bible and the love of Jesus.

Discovery ClassChristian education for youth in 1st grade through 6th grade is taught on Sunday mornings prior to the service at 9:45am.  The classes are taught using the Workshop Rotation Model.  This model takes the approach of spending 2 to 3 weeks on the same topic/bible passage which allows the children to more fully understand the concept.  Every year a different theme is chosen by the committee for the church year.  This year it has been “The Words of God” which included words such as Respect, Loyalty, Faithfulness and Love.  Through art, drama, food preparation, and games, the concept comes alive to the children and allows for them to incorporate the idea into their daily lives.  The classes are taught by volunteers among parents and other church members.  At GPC we have been using this method for 5 years and both the children and the teachers have found this method to be fun and educational.

Every year the children end the church season putting their faith to work, raising money for the Heifer Project which sends animals all over the world.  They collect pledges per lap and ride their bikes, roller blades and scooters around the church parking lot.  The children then get to pick the animals that will be purchased with their money.

Discovery sets the stage for the children’s faith journey and the community has the opportunity to learn and grow with them.

Fall 2007

Our theme this year, "Following Jesus," was selected to familiarize our children with the New Testament and to illustrate how important Jesus is in their daily lives.  We have a very dedicated group of volunteers who are committed to working with our children, but we need you too!  Here is a list of the lesson topics and dates for the year.  If you are interested in teaching, or assisting with, a lesson, please let me know.  The children love having different teachers with diverse styles, ideas, etc. and who knows?  You might learn something as well!
